Calendar swap.

I am so excited… I just came across this really fun idea. You’ve heard of holiday card swaps a la Brooklyn Bride, where a blogger connects random people and you send a card to one person and someone else sends a card to you, but Calendar Swaps is new to me.

I love all of the great designed little letterpress calendars and I usually can’t help but buy one, when I run across one, so I have literally multiple calendars per room! I also have been buying my girlfriends Linda & Harriet calendars for years… in fact, I’ve already received my 2011s.

Thankfully, they are open to international participants! There is only one day left to enter here so hop to! I am already trying to decide what I will send… so fun. Such a great idea Kelly (Design*Crush) and Caroline (Greedy Girl).

More birdcages.

So I know what you’re thinking, here at HK Housewife it’s all birdcages, all the time, but this time it wasn’t my fault! It was a birthday gift from my good friend Kelly. Talk about the most perfect gift ever.

It’s from Kate Spade. No surprise there.

I was honestly looking for a statement necklace to spice up some simple dresses, so it just couldn’t be more perfect!

Luckily, I had the perfect card to write her a thank you note with!It’s already Friday here in HK so have a lovely weekend ahead!

Sydney Newsom Creative.

So I’m not one to brag, but I’m going to anyways… how cool is my new header?! I am just so beyond excited about it I can’t even tell you. By far and away, the best part of working for Minted is getting to meet and work with creative talent like Sydney.

It was a lot of fun to work with Sydney on this project… she intuitively understood what I was looking for and was able to incorporate my love of bright, festive, little details, cooking, and my new Asian home–you’ll notice that the ‘O’ is the Bauhinia flower featured prominently on Hong Kong’s flag.

So check out what she considered “leftovers” from our little project.

Expect to see some of these gorgeous elements incorporated into HK Houswife sometime soon–they are absolutely too good to go to waste!

In my humble opinion, Sydney’s special gift is hand lettering. Love and Peace Eternal is one of my top five Minted holiday cards this year, which is saying something, given the hours I spend looking at cards each and every day! I sung it’s praises in great detail a while back on the Minted blog.

I’m convinced that her Gallery Classic design is going to be one of our best sellers this holiday season.

Lladro Parrots

[First of all, I apologize for the shambled look of the site… as you can see the incredibly talented Sydney Newsom just created a super fun, new header for me, but we’re having a little trouble getting it up and running… technology is clearly not my thing, but I hope to have it looking just right very soon!]

So as you know I have a thing for birdcages, but am not sure I’m up for getting an actual bird… but I wouldn’t mind one of these porcelains from Lladro.

This blue statue is my favorite… but there are lots of fun things in their Lladro Party Parrots Collection–great name, right?

Isn’t this lovebird mirror adorable? I haven’t seen things this fresh from Lladro in a long time, or ever really!

Bird street.

So absolutely one of the tourist must sees in Hong Kong is Bird Street. In addition to caged birds for sale, people will literally brings their birds out to this street, like you would walk a dog.
There are all types of birds everywhere, even just sitting on top of trashcans.

As you may remember, I have a thing for birdcages. Here this little old lady is changing the paper in her cages… up until this point, I was really thinking I might want to take a bird home with me.These guys were my favorite:There were some really big, talking macaws… it’s hard not to feel a little bad when you see so many caged animals, most with clipped wings.
And then there is what the birds eat!No thanks. But maybe I will take a pretty bird house home and put a little stuffed guy in there?

Engagement party.

I had the great pleasure of throwing one of my dearest friends an engagement party while I was back in the States for Minted meetings.We did a little dinner for her and her fiance at Market Table, which is a really cozy spot in the West Village.

They have a nice private room in the basement, which may sound less than desirable, but is perfect for a crisp autumn night. It couldn’t have been a more cozy, intimate evening.

I decided to go with a Kelly green theme because the bride-to-be’s name is Kelly! She had mentioned she was considering Kelly green as one of her wedding colors and it’s always nice to give your colors a visual, trial run.

I also ordered a bunch of photos of Kelly & Kevin and backed them with green paper. I also made placecards out of the same paper. It really is amazing what you can do with construction paper, scissors and a gluestick! Oh and a white pen! Love white pens.

Food processor grating.

Until just recently, I never ever used the metal plates that come with your food processor, which is such a shame because they can be wonderfully helpful! Now I know it is a pain to get out the whole device, but so is grating, say a pound of cheddar cheese, so even with the clean up it can be a big time saver. Speaking of grating cheese for a great recipe, Cheddar Crisps with Roasted Grape Relish. So it doesn’t suggest using a food processor to grate the cheese, but it is perfect because you end up using the food processor to make the dough… After you’re done grating the cheese, you add flour, cayenne, and butter and it combines into a very easy to work with dough. You roll it out into a long skinny tube and then cut rounds to line a muffin tin. The resulting crisps are super sturdy unlike so many appetizers. And the cayenne gives them a surprising kick. The result of filling the muffin tins half way is that you have a nice little edge that holds the relish on. Yay for appetizers that really don’t require a plate or napkin! And while you have your food processor out, you might as well make some of the fluffiest berry shortbread you’ll ever taste. You basically make a dough, shape it into two balls, refrigerate it for a few hours and then grate the first ball. Then take your favorite jar of jam, put it in a plastic baggie… cut off one of the corners and squeeze the jam out onto the crumbles. Once I made this with my Mother-In-Law’s homemade and home grown strawberry rhubarb jam and it was honestly absolutely mind blowing… but we are now rationing her jam (and praying that we get more in our stockings this year) so this is store bought. Then you grate the next ball and RESIST the urge to pat down the crumblies… do not worry it will bake together and be light as a feather!
